[06] knock
I hold the key hanging from my neck and unlock the door. We step inside. I lock the door. We take off our shoes. She sits on the couch. I turn on the tv. With the sound low, I look for a cartoon. I land on Tom and Jerry, a favorite. We hardly blink. The minutes turn into hours. My lids are heavy and I drift. A knock sends chills up my back and heat to my face. I jolt up from the couch and turn the sound off. In a hush I sternly tell my sister to be quiet. Another knock. I freeze and stare at the door. The doorknob turns slowly. Deafened by fear, I only hear my heart pounding in my chest. The knob turns again, but quicker. The door bobs a little as it's pushed on from the other side. Terror pulses through my whole body. I wonder who is on the other side of the door. What will happen next. I don't know what to do. It's quiet once more. I exhale. We are alone again.
